Attorney - Labor Relations Counsel

About the role

The Attorney position within the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) Legal Division is open until filled. Applications will be reviewed every 15 days starting June 13, 2023. This position may offer a telework opportunity subject to departmental policies and operational needs. Starting July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.

Responsibilities

• Work on diverse labor and employment duties including litigating a wide variety of interesting and impactful labor and employment cases.
• Conduct workplace investigations and provide in-house counsel on employment and personnel matters.
• Consult and draft legal opinions for high-level executives on sensitive issues and projects.
• Independently represent CalHR and other departments in civil litigation, including both state and federal courts, and appellate courts in labor law matters.
• Argue consequential matters in superior and appellate courts involving important public policy issues.
• Enjoy being assigned the majority of your work from the inception of the case and working towards its resolution.
• Mentor more junior attorneys throughout your tenure at CalHR.

Requirements

• Minimum Requirements: Refer to the Class Specification for detailed requirements.
• Desirable Qualifications: Excellent written and oral communication skills, practical experience in litigation, knowledge of labor and employment law, and abilities in legal research and analysis.

Qualifications

• Minimum Requirements: CA State BAR License.
• Desirable Qualifications: Knowledge of the law and abilities in legal research and analysis, ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

$7,969.00 - $10,473.00 L/month
$8,969.00 - $12,026.00 M/month
$7,506.00 - $9,439.00 N/month
$8,448.00 - $10,836.00 O/month
