Lab Technician - Microbiology

About the role

As a Lab Technician - Microbiology at Mérieux NutriSciences in Allentown, PA, you will prepare samples for processing and maintain documentation to facilitate testing procedures. This role supports our mission to make food systems safer, healthier, and more sustainable.

Responsibilities

• Prepare samples for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending.
• Write identification onto plates to track client and sample numbers.
• Pipette sample solutions into tubes or plates according to analysis processes.
• Pour agar into plates or tubes to initiate the growth process.
• Collect plates and place them in incubators for specified times and temperatures.
• Prepare media and broth for pathogen testing as required.
• Ensure media and materials are ready for the next testing sequence.
• Maintain knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis.
• Read plates and tubes to determine the number of organisms in samples.
• Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes.
• Perform housekeeping duties, keeping work areas and equipment clean and sanitized.
• Participate in cleaning schedules and maintain retain samples as required.
• Adhere to all safety policies and support laboratory management in implementing and improving the management system.
• Perform other related tasks as needed.

Requirements

• High School Diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology, Biology, or a related field preferred.
• Basic knowledge of science to perform testing procedures accurately.
• Basic knowledge of personal computers for data entry.
• Understanding of laboratory safety procedures and policies.
• Planning skills to maintain supplies and ensure timely analysis.

Skills

• Time management and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Attention to detail.
• Analytical skills for completing analysis procedures.
• General knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Physical dexterity for manipulating samples.

Work Environment

The role is based in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials may occur. Safety equipment such as gloves, laboratory coats, and eyeglasses may be required. Daily use of an autoclave is expected. The role involves continuous lifting of materials up to 50 pounds and extended periods of standing. The ability to detect slight variations in shades of color is necessary.

Pay

$19.00/hourly USD.

Schedule

Two schedule options are available:

• 4-day workweek: 12:30 PM – 10:30 PM (four 10-hour shifts) between Tuesday and Saturday. The 4 selected days will be set as the schedule.
• 5-day workweek: Monday–Friday, 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM.

Overtime: 3–5 hours per week, paid at time and a half.

Training Schedule (first month only):

• For the 4-day schedule: Tuesday–Friday, 12:00 PM – 10:30 PM.
• For the 5-day schedule: Monday–Friday, 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM.

No previous lab experience is required. Candidates from manufacturing, production, warehouse, food industry, food service, or retail are encouraged to apply.
