About the role

The Lab Support Technician (LST I) is part of the provider care team acting in a support capacity for reports, data, and scheduling functions of the laboratory. This position provides accurate, timely, and effective laboratory support while exhibiting excellent customer service skills in line with the Mercy Signature Service for all internal and external customer interactions.

The LST I is responsible for the skillful acquisition of laboratory specimens for testing, utilizing safe, accurate, and professional methodologies while observing HIPAA confidentiality requirements and lab policies. The role also includes processing, transport, and referral of all types of laboratory specimens and reports as required.

To achieve the competencies of the LST I position, the coworker must be observed by laboratory management or designee and complete all departmental checklists.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate, timely, and effective laboratory support.
  • Exhibit excellent customer service skills in all interactions.
  • Acquire laboratory specimens for testing using safe and professional methodologies.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA confidentiality requirements and lab policies.
  • Process, transport, and refer all types of laboratory specimens and reports.
  • Complete departmental checklists and competencies as observed by laboratory management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, G.E.D., or enrollment in a healthcare career program through a high school curriculum.
  • Successful completion of probationary period.
  • No active disciplinary actions or active performance improvement plans.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College-level Chemistry, Biology, or other science courses.
  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory.
