Lab Support Tech

About the Role

Works under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager/Director, depending on the facility organizational chart. This position performs routine and special laboratory specimen collections, handling, and distributions according to established protocols and standard operating procedures, ensuring collection of the appropriate specimen in the correct container with appropriate labeling. The role also involves explaining specimen collection procedures and instructions to patients, nurses, physicians, etc. Depending on the work site assignment, the Laboratory Support Tech I may travel to off-site patient locations to collect blood and transport specimens back to the lab. The position maintains patient confidentiality and properly identifies patients according to facility guidelines (e.g., Patient Safety Goals). Responsibilities include maintaining proper inventory and stock levels in the department, adhering to quality control and assurance guidelines, and ensuring effective intra- and interdepartmental communication. The role also supports accreditation readiness for standards from CAP, DNV, State, OSHA, CLIA, etc., and assists in training new and existing personnel as well as students.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates accuracy in laboratory specimen collection and handling based on orders, including collection requirements, containers, volumes, techniques, scheduling, preservatives, patient instructions, and distribution.
• Performs job duties accurately and timely to ensure quality patient care.
• Maintains a safe environment by complying with RHS policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements that support National Patient Safety Goals and Quality Initiatives.
• Performs patient identification and labeling functions accurately according to policy and standard operating procedures, recognizing and reporting variances and providing resolutions.
• Uses appropriate protective equipment, body mechanics, and follows safety guidelines and procedures; identifies and acts to resolve variances or suspected non-compliance, reporting to management.
• Collaborates with providers, office staff, nurses, caregivers, and other team members involved in patient care to meet specialized patient needs.
• Demonstrates compliance with department Quality Management Program, regulatory agency requirements, and standard operating procedures to maintain accreditation with CAP, DNV, CLIA, and other governmental and accrediting agencies.
• Participates in duties such as preventative maintenance, quality control, verifications, audits, procedure reviews, and demonstrating procedure knowledge, as well as assisting with updates.
• Demonstrates compliance with the laboratory QA/QI program.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED (Preferred); Program Graduate, Phlebotomy or Lab Specimen training program (Preferred)
• Experience: Direct patient care and/or phlebotomy experience (Preferred)

Pay

Hiring Range: $16.20 - $21.08/Hourly. Actual pay is determined based on job-related factors such as relevant experience, education, credentials, skills, internal equity, and business needs.
