Lab Clerk | PRN

About the role

The Laboratory Clerk processes the delivery of all incoming laboratory specimens, including registration, order entry, and receipt of samples into the LIS system. After pre-analytic processing, specimens are delivered to the Analytical area for testing. Clerical staff also handle outpatient pre-employment laboratory processing for LCMH employees and pre-op laboratory services, perform daily temperature and disinfection checks, and serve as the laboratory’s first line of customer service.

Reports directly to the Assistant Director of Pathology.

Responsibilities

• Registers patients in the laboratory computer accurately and timely.
• Obtains a copy of the patient’s photo ID and insurance card (if applicable and available) and scans documents to accounts.
• Collects updated demographic information and accurately codes details such as contact numbers, emergency contact, mailing address, Living Will information, email address, and marital status.
• Orders laboratory tests accurately.
• Receives specimens into the laboratory computer system accurately and timely.
• Collects LCMH pre-employment drug screens using chain of custody.
• Maintains patient files related to laboratory testing.
• Faxes results to physicians.
• Answers the telephone and provides information or relays messages to appropriate personnel.
• Ensures proper collection for specimen integrity.
• Keeps the outpatient area clean and well maintained.
• Utilizes proper hand washing techniques.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent required.
• Minimum of 1 year laboratory experience preferred.
• Basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and in-depth knowledge of specimen collection tools and techniques.
• Basic computer skills and basic mathematics skills.

• Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear.
• Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
• Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• May be at risk for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
• Moderate noise level in the work environment.
• Requires mental competence, alertness, dexterity, accuracy of physical movements, clear and pleasant speaking abilities, accurate hearing, and visual acuity.
