Lab Clerk

Optum is a global organization dedicated to improving health outcomes by connecting people with the care, pharmacy benefits, data, and resources they need. As a Lab Clerk, you will play a crucial role in processing specimens and supporting the main laboratory processing department.
Responsibilities
- Specimen Processing: Receive, verify patient identification, sort, prepare, and distribute blood, urine, and other biological specimens according to protocol. Operate laboratory equipment and utilize the organization's EHR and LIS computer systems.
- Phone and Customer Service: Field phone calls, provide ordering information on lab tests, answer telephones, take and relay messages, and offer phone customer service. Handle inquiries regarding test ordering information and patient results from providers, and contact reference laboratories for test inquiries and resolution.
- Documentation and Resource Management: Handle documentation related to lab incidents, fill out reference lab forms, resolve specimen issues, and report issues. Ensure results are received from external testing sites and scanned into the EHR.
- Maintenance of Equipment: Record temperatures, defrost freezers, and clean laboratory equipment. Ensure all equipment functions correctly and adheres to maintenance schedules.
- Quality Improvement and Compliance: Participate in Quality Improvement and Lean Process Improvement activities. Complete mandatory learning requirements and attend department, team, and committee meetings. Comply with all department and location-specific policies and procedures.
- Soft Skills: Demonstrate solid organizational skills, multitasking abilities, and a calm demeanor. Exhibit effective verbal and written communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED
- 1+ years of computer proficiency experience
- 6+ months of experience in a clinical laboratory including specimen processing OR 6+ months of phlebotomy experience
- 6+ months of demonstrated ability to engage in professional phone communication with both patients and healthcare providers
- Ability to work a 40-hour flexible work week to include the hours of 7:00am to 3:30 pm or 10:00 am to 6:30 pm. The schedule will be determined by the supervisor upon hire. Rotating Holidays and Weekends possible
Qualifications
- Current BLS certification or ability to obtain within the first 30 days of employment
- Knowledge of laboratory information systems (LIS) for data entry and specimen tracking purposes
- Understanding of regulatory requirements, including OSHA, CLIA, and CAP standards, pertaining to laboratory safety and compliance
- Proven ability to process biological samples efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Proven attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards, especially in tasks involving specimen processing procedures and support functions
- Demonstrated flexibility for covering team members on leave and adjusting working hours as needed
- Proven ability to exhibit a commitment to continuous learning and professional development, ensuring current knowledge of advancements in the field

Pay
The hourly pay for this role will range from $16.15 to $28.80 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
Schedule
This role consists of a 40-hour work week, with a flexible schedule between the hours of 7:00 am to close (approximately 11:30 pm). The schedule will be determined by the supervisor upon hire. Rotating holidays and weekends are possible.
