Lab Clerk/lab Assistant/Tri City

About the Role

Performs all functions necessary to register outpatients and outreach patients, including outpatient and outreach patient test order entry. Compiles and audits registration information for accuracy and forwards it to patient accounts and medical records. Obtains specimens from patients for laboratory procedures, instructs patients and personnel on proper specimen collection, labeling, storage, documentation, billing, and transport requirements. Processes specimens for analysis, storage, and reference lab testing.

Responsibilities

• Performs admission interview process at the Laboratory Outreach Service Centers or uses information provided by outreach clients at the time of specimen collection or pickup.
• Obtains patient demographic, insurance, and other pertinent information, ensuring all Medicare, insurance, and managed care requirements are met prior to registration.
• Responds to patient inquiries.
• Obtains blood specimens in inpatient and outpatient settings following established procedures, time frames, and safety requirements.
• Performs specimen collections requiring special procedures, including diagnostic electrocardiograms on outpatients, Therapeutic INR QC and testing, urine collection and processing, and other non-blood or urine specimens.
• Labels, receives, and distributes specimens in the laboratory.
• Assists in the laboratory area and acts as a resource for laboratory information.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of insurance regulations and Medicare requirements.
• Collects co-pays and other payments from patients.

Requirements

• High school education or equivalent (GED).
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Skill in use of computers, including word processing.
• Three months of customer service experience.
• Phlebotomy experience (3 months) or a Clinical Phlebotomy certificate (minimum 32 hours of clinical rotation) or 6 months of experience in a medical field providing patient care, including drawing blood.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) training required during orientation prior to providing patient care; must maintain current BLS certification throughout employment.
• For outreach employees: Valid Oklahoma State Driver’s license with fewer than 3 points on record (if hired into department #40110). MVR must meet NRHS MVR policy criteria or Defensive Driving course must be taken.

Qualifications

• Preferred: 1 year of experience in a medical setting.
