About the role
The Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist supports lab operations by processing and handling patient specimens for diagnostic testing in an accurate and timely manner and following established protocols.
Responsibilities
- Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
- Cooperates with laboratory divisions and nursing personnel to ensure proper collection of adequate and appropriate specimens for testing.
- Communicates with Nursing Personnel when patient refuses and uses hospital resources when language barriers exist.
- Adheres to department policy involving the proper identification of a patient and proper labeling of blood samples.
- Maintains orderly and timely flow of specimens to the technical departments in order to expedite the analysis of samples.
- Reviews lab requisitions from physicians for accuracy, completeness, medical necessity, and hospital’s ability to perform test and/or route specimen for testing.
- Prepares specimens for analysis, including centrifuging, aliquoting, plating, etc.
- Transports and stores specimens for future analysis.
- Performs registrations per hospital policy in order to provide assistance to patients and hospital personnel.
- May coordinate the loading of prepared patient samples on the automation lines to ensure timely sampling (where required by local laboratory needs).
- Other lab assistance duties as assigned by the supervisor or manager, including the performance of phlebotomy and collection of blood specimens via venipuncture or micro-technique at some locations; or training other Lab Assistants as directed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED
- Less than 1 year Prior laboratory assistance and/or phlebotomy training required at certain laboratory locations.
Qualifications
- Lift and carry 40-50 lbs.
