About the role
The role of Lab Assistant at MercyOne Dubuque involves supporting various laboratory departments by assisting technical staff in specimen collection, processing, analysis, and reporting. Key responsibilities include ensuring accurate and efficient specimen handling, resolving problematic specimens, and maintaining compliance with quality and safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Supports technical staff in specimen collection, processing, and reporting.
- Affixes specimens and requisitions from internal and external customers, managing add-on orders and pending lists.
- Registers and logs specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), evaluates specimen adequacy, and documents required information.
- Performs specimen processing, including identification, aliquoting, plate streaking, slide preparation, and documentation.
- Collaborates with laboratory staff and clients to resolve test order issues.
- Operates laboratory information systems for accurate data entry and workflow management.
- Contributes to general laboratory operations by restocking supplies, participating in peer teaching, and engaging in department or hospital committees and projects.
Requirements
- Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly.
- Comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
- Personal presence characterized by honesty, integrity, and caring, inspiring and motivating others.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
Skills
- Proficiency in laboratory information systems.
- Ability to handle specimens and perform venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks.
- Knowledge of safety, infection control, and chemical-handling procedures.
