About the role
The Laboratory Assistant I provides support and customer service for the clinical laboratory department, processing specimens and performing waived or moderate testing as indicated by the Clinical Laboratory manager or director. This includes pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical duties. The role involves receiving, processing, labeling, distributing, and testing specimens (if indicated), as well as communicating with nursing and laboratory staff regarding specimen issues. A thorough understanding of laboratory specimens and HIS/LIS computer systems is required. Clerical duties are also part of the role as needed.
Responsibilities
- Process and label specimens for distribution and testing.
- Perform waived or moderate testing if assigned by the Clinical Laboratory manager or director.
- Communicate effectively with nursing and laboratory staff regarding specimen problems.
- Follow established protocols and procedures to ensure quality patient results.
- Perform clerical duties as required.
- Complete training and assist in unpacking and putting away inventory items.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend English, perform computer functions, and process paperwork.
- Professional telephone etiquette and effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Problem-solving ability in complex situations.
- Ability to stay organized, self-motivated, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfortable working with human specimens (e.g., body fluids, urines).
- Ability to work assigned shifts.
Schedule
Day shift, 0600-1830. This position is authorized for 8.00 hours bi-weekly.
