About the Role

The Laboratory Assistant, under the supervision and direction of a licensed clinical laboratory scientist and the department general supervisor, performs test processing in certain areas of the laboratory, which may or may not include the following:

• Adhering to the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing.
• Loading and distributing patient samples from the processing areas to the respective testing areas.
• Preparing patient samples prior to the analytical phase, which includes, but is not limited to, whole blood, serum/plasma, dried blood, dried serum/plasma, urine, saliva, etc.
• Loading samples onto an automated analyzer.
• Performing and adhering to relevant SOPs.
• Maintaining and performing necessary maintenance on instrumentation, small lab equipment, and general lab cleanliness.
• Maintaining laboratory documentation requirements.
• Aiding in proper labeling of reagents, calibrators, and quality control materials.
• Maintaining inventory in the pre-analytical process.
• Disposing of specimens and materials after the analytical phase in accordance with safety and general testing SOP requirements.
• Maintaining a clean and tidy workspace.
• Continuously looking for areas of improvement in workflow processes and suggesting/recommending improvements to the General Supervisor.
• Fulfilling all laboratory safety requirements and reporting any possible hazards to the General Supervisor.
• Communicating appropriately with other laboratory personnel in daily huddles and throughout the work shift.
• Assisting the accessioning department as needed.
• Performing other duties as assigned.
