Responsibilities
- Perform phlebotomies and capillary blood collections from inpatients and outpatients, both on-site and off-site.
- Processes and orders testing on specimens for reference laboratories, as well as performs CLIA waived laboratory testing under the direction of the Manager and/or Medical Technologist.
- Follows Quality Control Practices in relation to CLIA waived laboratory testing.
- Keeps track of all specimens submitted to pathology.
- Maintains good public relations with the physicians and their staff, patients and the general public.
- Instructs patients on proper collection of both urine, as well as stool specimens.
- Collections nasal washings from outpatients.
- Collects urine specimens for urine pre-employment drug screens, utilizing a chain of custody.
- Responsible for front end laboratory compliance checking as well as following Medicare Medical Necessity rules.
- Monitors customer concerns and daily workflow.
- May perform other duties within the laboratory as needed.
Requirements
- Frequent access to patient records; expected to maintain full confidentiality in accordance to HIPAA guidelines.
- Strong written, oral and organizational skills required.
- Attention to detail is required.
- Must know medical terminology, blood collection technique on all age groups, pre-employment drug screen collections, basics of pre-analytical testing variables, computer skills, excellent customer service, and being an ongoing liaison between clients and providers.
- Knowledge in laboratory compliance and Medical Necessity.
- Knowledge in testing requirements for collecting, processing, and ordering for both License/Certification: Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Must provide a copy of diploma. Completion of an accredited phlebotomist program or on-the-job training with experience.
- Experience: One year experience as a phlebotomist desired, preferably in a hospital and/or clinic setting.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Conditions
- Requires visual acuity and depth perception to recognize words and numbers; and hand and finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination to use a computer keyboard and common office equipment.
- Work involves standing, walking, stooping, and occasional carrying and lifting of lightweight materials (up to 20 pounds).
- May be required to sit for extended periods of time.
