About the role

As a Kanjobal Telephone Interpreter, you will handle on-demand calls, verbally translating conversations between Kanjobal and English speakers. This remote, independent contractor position requires professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to manage calls across diverse industries, including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, law enforcement, and 911. Calls may involve technical subjects, emotional situations, or extended durations without breaks.

Responsibilities

• Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and conduct interpretation in a friendly, professional manner.
• Render accurate concepts and meanings following established interpretation protocols, avoiding omissions or additions.
• Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
• Maintain professionalism and neutrality during sessions, even when speakers are incoherent or upset (e.g., 911 calls).
• Adhere to client instructions and industry-specific protocols (e.g., medical, legal, insurance).
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and adapt to diverse, potentially stressful, or emotional calls.
• Remain punctual, available during work hours, and compliant with company standards in dynamic environments.
• Operate company-provided software and systems to perform all job functions.

Requirements

• Fluency in Kanjobal and English, including cultural and regional nuances.
• Excellent listening, retention, and note-taking skills for accurate interpretation.
• Ability to remain neutral, objective, and detached during sensitive conversations (e.g., end-of-life, medical, or legal matters).
• High school diploma or equivalent; language-related education or experience (e.g., teaching, translation) preferred.
• Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future visa sponsorship.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Ability to adapt to technology enhancements for service delivery.
• Not currently employed by a LanguageLine Solutions client or affiliate.

Technical Requirements

• Dedicated personal device (desktop/laptop with Windows, MacOS, or ChromeOS; tablets or smartphones acceptable).
• Restricted: Kaspersky products and Huawei hardware.
• High-speed internet: ≥5 Mbps download, ≥3 Mbps upload, ≤300 ms ping, ≤30 ms jitter.
• Quiet, distraction-free workspace.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to operate a keyboard/mouse and remain stationary for extended periods.
• Sufficient manual dexterity for typing/writing.
• Capable of lifting up to 26 lbs.
• Exposure to moderate noise levels (e.g., computer, audio, telephone).

Pay

$1.25–$1.40 per minute.
