K-12 Continuing Education Specialist (Part Time)

This position is on San Juan Island, 100 miles north of the Seattle area and is open to College of the Environment employees only.

About the Role

The K-12 Science Outreach Continuing Education Specialist is responsible for developing and facilitating educational experiences for students in kindergarten through high school, including field trips; coordinating presenters, resources, and supplies; and teaching science lessons.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate Presenters, Resources, Supplies, and Learning Experiences – 40%
  • Assist with logistics involving schools, teachers, transportation, faculty, and other units to ensure participant access to labs, the whale museum, marina, beach, and forest.
  • Ensure necessary equipment and supplies for participant experiences are inventoried, maintained, operational, and ordered on time.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and drive to field trips, including hauling equipment and supplies.
• Develop, Teach, and Maintain Science Lessons and Projects – 40%
  • Work with the program director to develop and teach hands-on science curriculum focused on Northwest marine and freshwater systems.
  • Independently teach K-12 educational units when the program director is unavailable.
  • Maintain scientific integrity of ongoing projects, such as the Friday Harbor Marina Water Quality Monitoring conducted with 5th grade, an educational unit tracking port water quality for over two decades.
• Other Duties as Assigned – 20%
  • Update and maintain the FHL Science Outreach Program website by writing and posting engaging articles, updating images, adding data to scientific projects, and informing participants and the local community of relevant deadlines and upcoming events.
  • Complete required trainings, including those for working with youth, in a timely manner.

Requirements

• Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or education.
  • At least one year of experience teaching science to K-12 students.
• Additional Qualifications
  • Available to work on a varied, inflexible schedule dictated by tides and classroom needs.
  • Excellent skills in working in multi-faceted environments that require flexibility and adaptability.
  • Maintain a current driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of science and science education, including familiarity with Northwest flora and fauna and watershed science.
• Strong computer skills, including MS Office and website development and maintenance.
• Ability to relate well with children of varying ages and backgrounds as well as adults.
• Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively as a team member with other staff and volunteers, as well as independently.
• Familiarity with working safely on boats and with equipment in a marine environment.

Working Conditions

• Many duties are conducted outside in all seasons and weather, including wet and muddy conditions.
• Frequent walking on uneven ground, lifting 20+ pounds, standing, and sitting are required.

Pay

Annual pay range: $55,032.00 – $82,548.00
