Juvenile Probation Officer
About the role
Play a part in helping Douglas County's Juvenile Probation office achieve its mission to reduce delinquent behavior among youth by providing targeted interventions that address their specific needs while prioritizing the safety and well-being of the community.
Responsibilities
- Supervises a caseload of probationers; periodically visits probationer’s home, place of employment, and/or school; conducts weapons and contraband searches and drug testing; enforces adherence to court ordered conditions of probation.
- Counsels and advises juveniles and their families regarding personal, social, educational, financial, vocational, and health related issues; conducts assessments and interviews; works with other staff and agencies in developing treatment plans; teaches and models social skills; applies behavior modification techniques; plans and supervises various programs, such as physical education, work experiences, outdoor intervention programs and recreational activities.
- Arrests, detains and transports probationers who have violated court orders; may perform a variety of booking and intake duties and makes determinations about formally processing cases through the court system and about requiring secured detention prior to a court hearing; transports to and from facilities and juvenile programs and provides transportation for other probation needs.
- Investigates the background and criminal records of juveniles and prepares and presents pre-sentencing reports before the Court; investigates and processes probation violations and makes recommendations to the Court.
- Provides 24-hour standby support to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department regarding juvenile matters.
- Provides resources for youth with mental health and suicidal ideation crisis.
- Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
- Maintains a variety of records and case files; writes reports, statements, legal documents, correspondence and other written materials; presents reports to various Courts, officials and agencies.
- Maintains relationships with law enforcement, Courts, social service and community resource services; participates in juvenile delinquency prevention activities such as speaking engagements, training sessions or working with youth groups.
- Uses County vehicle to perform various tasks related to job duties. May assist with the Outdoor Behavior Health Program for assigned juveniles.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience in providing probation and casework/counseling services to juveniles; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age at date of employment.

Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
Pay
Compensation Douglas County's compensation system is based on Pay for Performance wherein employees are eligible for annual performance evaluations. The current structure consists of merit increases up to 3% on a qualifying employee's anniversary and Cost of Living Adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index during the first pay period of each fiscal year. The COLA will be up to 5% depending on the CPI each year. Additionally, eligible employees can be recognized for outstanding performance, above and beyond the call of duty, and receive additional compensation through the Recognition of Excellence Program.
