About the role

The Hennepin County Information Technology (IT) Department is seeking a Principal Accountant to lead and guide projects in the areas of rate recovery and asset management, in addition to working on other projects as part of IT Finance.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in team of IT and other County department staff in reviewing current cost recovery rate structure, developing alternatives, recommending changes, and implementing new structure.
  • Review and analyze IT financial operations on a monthly basis, identify and communicate points of concern, and work with managers and CIO on revising budget plan as needed; develop and prepare monthly reports communicating status and findings.
  • Review fixed asset management system, monitor its operations, reconcile both IT and County-wide assets to general ledger system on annual basis, and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Establish and implement inventory plan and procedures for various categories of assets.
  • Work with IT managers and other County departments to implement software license tracking system; once implemented, supervise IT staff assigned to maintaining system and establish appropriate controls to insure data integrity.
  • Monitor preparation of annual audit schedules. Participate in team of IT staff responsible for modifying IT operations as needed to work efficiently and effectively on PeopleSoft system, to be completed in 2010.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, finance or a closely related field.
  • At least four years of experience as an accountant.
  • Experience with fixed asset accounting and asset systems.
  • Cost accounting experience in an IT environment.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing schedules for independent audits.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles applicable to government accounting.
  • Experience with policy and procedure creation, review and implementation.
  • Ability to prepare financial reports and communicate complex issues and solutions.
  • Experience working with Excel and Access.
  • Ability to understand and evaluate complex systems, make recommendations, and act on selected solution.
