About the Role

Under general supervision, performs supervision and administration of detention work of moderate difficulty in the Juvenile Detention facility.

Responsibilities

  • Builds positive working relationships with Detention Manager and staff to create a positive, caring, safe, healthy, and learning environment for detained youth.
  • Serves as an essential Detention Leadership Team Member for implementing detention services aligned with the Department’s Mission and Model.
  • Collaborates with the Detention Manager and other staff to implement, quality assure, and improve Detention’s programs and activities.
  • Works as part of a team with coworkers, parents, probation officers, service providers, and community connections to support youths.
  • Monitors and provides instruction for staff programs.
  • Attends or observes and facilitates Detention Officers’ participation in Detention, ensuring adherence to Youth’s Individualized Detention Plans.
  • Serves as a faculty member of the Coconino County Juvenile Detention Training Academy and provides ongoing training to academy graduates.
  • Assists the Detention Manager in hiring and selection processes for new staff.
  • Provides leadership, trains, and supervises Detention Living Unit staff and/or Control Room Staff, including performance evaluations.
  • Offers staff regular strength-based feedback and supports staff development.
  • Serves as a highly skilled staff member in understanding individual youth’s needs, challenges, and strengths to individualize services for optimal outcomes.
  • Works directly with staff and detained youth, intervening with the most challenged youth as needed.
  • Ensures staff implementation of youth-specific services, interventions, and policy and procedures for suicide prevention and wellness restoration.
  • Ensures staff compliance and fidelity to Detention Policies & Procedures and Programs.
  • Maintains safety and security of the juvenile detention facility, including facility inspections and safety checks.
  • Facilitates conflict resolution between staff.
  • Handles emergency or crisis situations, including situation review and debriefing.
  • Ensures completion of intake and release procedures.
  • Participates in youth grievance appeals.
  • Updates records and writes accurate, detailed reports as necessary.
  • May appear in court to report youths’ progress.
  • Ensures timeliness and accuracy within the Juvenile On-Line Tracking System (JOLTS) Living Unit Post.

Essential physical functions: Stand and walk for 5 or more hours; independent body mobility to bend, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, and sit for prolonged periods; drive a vehicle; manual dexterity to reach and grasp; handwrite or use a computer keyboard; vision sufficient to see and read; hear and speak to communicate; lift or restrain a detainee; lift, push, or pull materials or equipment of 50 lbs. or less.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of experience working with juveniles in a residential setting; or
  • Associate’s degree in a related field and four years of experience working with juveniles in a residential setting; or
  • Five years of experience working with juveniles in a residential setting; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Additional requirements:

  • Must submit to a background check prior to hire. Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for hire within the Juvenile Detention facility.
  • Forty hours of orientation training are required within the first month on the job.
  • Sixteen additional hours of COJET-certified training are required each year.
  • Must obtain an Arizona driver’s license by the date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Final job offer contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.
  • This position is safety-sensitive and non-exempt from overtime.

Considerable knowledge of:

  • Trauma-Informed Care-based principles and practices of effective supervision, leadership, and training.
  • Principles, methods, and techniques of group and individual counseling.
  • Child and adolescent development theories and application.
  • Dynamics of behavioral and emotional problems in children.
  • Crisis intervention and basic first aid techniques, including CPR.
  • Detention policies and procedures and applicable state laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Basic principles and methods of treatment for juvenile delinquency.

Working knowledge of:

  • Practices and procedures of a juvenile detention facility.
  • Juvenile court proceedings.
  • Human behavior and various social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Recordkeeping, documentation, and report writing.
  • Adolescent group activity planning and leadership.

Ability to:

  • Effectively plan and schedule the work of others.
  • Make appropriate decisions regarding methods of intervention and treatment.
  • Deal impartially with individuals of various socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Work safely and support a culture of workplace safety.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
