About the role

The position involves providing safety, security, and well-being for residents, visitors, and staff within a detention facility. Key responsibilities include supervising residents, facilitating therapeutic interventions, monitoring behavior, and maintaining resident files.

Responsibilities

  • Closely supervise residents to ensure adequate security measures are met.
  • Maintain and organize resident files to ensure compliance with state administrative rules.
  • Assist teachers and deal with disciplinary matters as necessary.
  • Perform room checks, searches for prohibited items, and counts of potentially dangerous items.
  • Provide 24-hour monitoring and supervision of acute residents admitted for hospitalization.
  • Engage in group and individualized therapeutic interventions using various techniques.
  • Handle medical emergencies, administer first aid, and assist medical staff.
  • Communicate with residents, offer counseling, and refer them to appropriate professionals.
  • Organize and direct group recreational activities.
  • Ensure residents follow health and hygiene practices.
  • Distribute and supervise meals.
  • Provide after-hours, weekend, and holiday contact for the Family Division of the Circuit Court.

Requirements

  • Equivalent of two years of college level coursework in child development or closely related field.
  • Prefer a Bachelor’s Degree in a child development related field.
  • Prefer six months of experience working with delinquent or emotionally troubled youths and/or families, which may have been in an intern or volunteer capacity.
  • OR A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years working with delinquent or emotionally troubled youths and/or families, which may have been in an intern or volunteer capacity.

Qualifications

  • Maintains required certification and minimum number of training hours in order to remain effective in the facility’s evidenced-based practices and procedures.
  • Adheres to departmental standards in regard to confidentiality and other privacy issues.
  • Able to meet deadlines in a timely manner, change focus on projects as needed, and multitask.
  • Dependable and regular attendance required.
  • Able to handle stressful situations on an occasional basis.
  • Able to maintain excellent customer service during stressful situations.
