About the role

The Youth Center Director oversees the operations and ensures the safety, security, and well-being of residents, visitors, and staff within the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Closely supervises residents to ensure adequate security measures are met.
  • Makes security checks, takes resident counts, does room checks, and monitors security cameras.
  • Monitors residents for potential crises and alerts staff as necessary.
  • Facilitates group and individualized therapeutic interventions using various techniques.
  • Operates and monitors electronic security and communication equipment.
  • Distributes facility keys, organizes group recreational activities, and assists teachers.
  • Documents resident behaviors and maintains resident files.
  • Assists with homework, arranges for guest speakers, and monitors residents during visitations.
  • Supervises daily housekeeping chores and performs laundry duties.
  • Performs ongoing safety checks and assists with transporting residents for medical appointments.
  • Provides informal counseling and discusses various matters of concern with residents.
  • Escorts residents to and from hearings and assists with phone calls and video conferences.
  • Trains new staff and assists in training cooks, custodians, and teachers.
  • Ensures good health and hygiene practices are followed by residents.
  • Distributes and supervises meals.
  • Provides after-hours, weekend, and holiday contact for the Family Division of the Circuit Court.

Requirements

  • Equivalent of two years of college level coursework in child development or closely related field.
  • Prefer a Bachelor’s Degree in a child development related field.
  • Prefer six months of experience working with delinquent or emotionally troubled youths and/or families, which may have been in an intern or volunteer capacity.
  • OR A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years working with delinquent or emotionally troubled youths and/or families, which may have been in an intern or volunteer capacity.

Qualifications

  • Maintains required certification and minimum number of training hours in order to remain effective in the facility’s evidenced-based practices and procedures.
  • Able to meet deadlines in a timely manner, change focus on projects as needed, and multitask.
  • Dependable and regular attendance required.
  • Able to handle stressful situations on an occasional basis.
  • Able to maintain excellent customer service during stressful situations.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills by engaging, interacting, and working with all individuals to ensure clarity and understanding in all interactions.
