About the role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Underwriter (Marine Insurance) to support the underwriting process by evaluating risk, reviewing applications, gathering and analyzing information, and assisting in the development of coverage recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Write new business (e.g., MAC, watersports and rental boat operations) and small to medium renewal commercial accounts, ensuring production aligns with rate, retention, and profit goals.
- Drive profitable portfolio performance by managing a dedicated book of renewal business, conducting comprehensive underwriting reviews approximately 90 days prior to expiration through detailed analysis of applications, prior policies, endorsements, loss history, online presence, and other risk indicators, while proactively escalating accounts that fall outside program guidelines.
- Protect underwriting integrity and portfolio quality by evaluating risks against established appetite and authority thresholds, making sound renewal decisions, and ensuring all required statutory notices are issued in compliance with state regulations when risks no longer meet eligibility requirements.
- Provide strategic underwriting recommendations by preparing thorough referral packages for accounts exceeding authority limits, presenting clear risk assessments, supporting documentation, and well-reasoned underwriting analysis to facilitate informed decision-making.
- Maintain audit-ready policy documentation through the ongoing organization, management, and quality control of electronic policy files, ensuring adherence to departmental standards and regulatory requirements.
- Deliver operational excellence by issuing Package, Commercial Marine, and Umbrella/Bumbershoot policies within 48 hours of receipt, ensuring accuracy and compliance with underwriting proposals and binding instructions.
- Proactively obtain, track, and follow up on outstanding broker documentation to ensure complete and compliant policy files.
- Enhance broker relationships and service excellence by serving as a trusted point of contact for policy, coverage, and billing inquiries, delivering timely communication and fostering strong business partnerships.
Requirements
- An associate’s degree from an accredited college, technical school, or equivalent combination of education, training, and related work experience.
- At least one year of relevant professional experience is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- The ability to learn underwriting systems and tools.

Pay
The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $33.66 per hour, reflecting the lowest and highest annual salary or hourly rate paid for the role and taking into account years of experience required, geography, and/or budget for this role.
