Junior Systems Administrator
Department: Information Technology Services • Location: Jerry Sue Thornton Center • Reports to: Director, Enterprise Application Services • Full-time, non-union support staff position.
About the role
Administers and supports administrative and academic applications across the College. Responsible for the installation, upgrade, maintenance, and support of both administrative and academic applications, including their respective database and server environments. Participates in technical strategic planning sessions to ensure the College is well positioned for the future.
Responsibilities
- Responds to, investigates, and resolves issues reported by end-users for supported applications, the associated backend databases, and all interfaced applications.
- Monitors and optimizes the performance of all associated server environments.
- Maintains database and middleware (Weblogic, Tomcat, etc.) server software as necessary.
- Maintains the servers (Windows, Linux, UNIX, etc.) as necessary.
- Maintains all associated disaster recovery environments.
- Develops and maintains the necessary troubleshooting documentation.
- Acts as primary liaison to the associated vendor HelpDesk for issue resolution.
- Applies security patches as necessary.
- Provides before, after hours, and weekend support to resolve application issues as necessary.
- Installs, upgrades, and configures new middleware server software, database software, and applications as necessary.
- Applies software patches and performs major upgrades as necessary.
- Provides before, after hours, and weekend support for migrations and upgrades as necessary.
- Identifies and evaluates new tools and solutions for improved application and server management.
- Identifies cross-training and documentation opportunities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in I.T., Computer Science, or related field. Significant related experience may substitute for education.
- Knowledge of TCP/IP, Ethernet, firewalls, routing, and load balancing.
- Knowledge of database connectivity issues.
- Working knowledge of systems administration concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Basic Visio skills.
- Basic Project Management skills.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to handle subject matters requiring privacy and sensitivity confidentially and discreetly.
- Ability to collaborate, persuade, gain cooperation, and resolve conflicts on significant projects.

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in I.T., Computer Science, or related field.
- Administrative experience with Windows Server (2008, 2012, etc.) and various Linux flavors (RedHat, Oracle for Linux, CentOS, etc.).
- Experience maintaining Java-based applications.
- Experience with Apache and/or Tomcat.
- Experience with Ellucian Banner and its associated Ellucian applications (Travel and Expense, DegreeWorks, etc.).
- Experience with relational databases (Oracle, MS SQL, etc.).
- Experience making sound decisions that affect a work unit or team.
- Knowledge of Microsoft IIS, including SSL/TLS certificates.
- Knowledge of authentication methodologies (Active Directory, LDAP, CAS, etc.).
- Intermediate proficiency with ERP Banner System (or equivalent program).
- Intermediate proficiency with Blackboard Learn (or equivalent program).
Physical Demands / Working Conditions
- The work is performed in a normal, professional office environment.
- The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
- Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the duties of the job and will perform repetitive motions with hands/fingers using a computer mouse and keyboard to type. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, files, pamphlets, books, etc.
- Work may also require walking and standing in conjunction with travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the worksite.
Pay
Target starting salary range: $50,000 to $60,000. The final offer will be based upon an assessment of internal equity, the unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications.
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
