About the Role

The Judiciary Clerk performs specialized clerical work following established guidelines and procedures in the Maryland District Court Criminal/Traffic system (Odyssey and File & Serve). This role involves daily case processing duties, assisting the public with information regarding Criminal/Traffic cases and court procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Enter data into the Maryland District Court Criminal/Traffic system (Odyssey and File & Serve).
  • Process motions, postponements, considerations, speedy trials, guilty pleas, restitution hearings, sentencings, violations of probation, and removal of cases from stet status.
  • Verify arrest warrants and scan documents into the appropriate file areas.
  • Perform data entry for appearances, writs, name changes, addresses, speedy trial requests, and other backlogs as needed.
  • Process appeals, jury trials, and mail to appropriate parties.
  • Provide copies to various agencies and parties.
  • Assist with customer service, including answering phones.
  • Recall bench warrants, issue writs, and schedule trial dates.
  • Notify parties of last-minute rulings on motions for cases with upcoming trials.
  • Update officer court schedules.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations, criminal justice, parole and probation, legal, or financial services.
  • Substitution options:
    • A Bachelor’s Degree may substitute for the required work experience.
    • A Paralegal/Associate’s Degree or 60 college credits may substitute for the required work experience.
    • A Paralegal Certificate may substitute for the required work experience.

Knowledge and Skills

  • General office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
  • Basic English and arithmetic (spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
  • Customer service, handling problems tactfully and patiently.
  • Typing on a personal computer with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in using standard office equipment (personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, cash register, scanner, fax machine).
  • Maintaining and using detailed filing systems and computer programs.
  • Exercising fact and understanding in stressful situations.
  • Interpreting and following complex directions.

Physical Requirements

  • Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
  • Ability to perform all essential functions of the position.

  • Personal computer, telephone, scanner, fax machine, printer, calculator, and copier.

Software and Computer Skills

  • Odyssey Navigator, Outlook, Microsoft Applications, Connect, File & Serve, and Adobe Suite.
