About the Role
This is a clerical position performing case processing duties and responsibilities daily, involving a high volume of data entry work for multiple case types, including criminal, juvenile, CINA, and others. The Judiciary Clerk assists the general public and court-related personnel, responding to inquiries about court forms, policies, and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Reviews and processes legal documents such as bench warrants, bond forfeitures, subpoenas, summonses, appeals, and continuances.
- Processes new cases and arranges service of legal process via the Sheriff’s Office, private process, or certified mail.
- Greets and assists the general public and court-related personnel, providing information on court forms, policies, and procedures.
- Enters and updates case information in the court’s data systems.
- Provides case status updates and procedural information.
- Receives, enters, and accounts for all monies received for fines, court costs, and fees using a computerized cash register.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations, criminal justice, parole and probation, legal, or financial services.
- Substitution options:
- A Bachelor’s Degree may substitute for the required work experience.
- A Paralegal/Associate’s Degree or 60 college credits may substitute for the required work experience.
- A Paralegal Certificate may substitute for the required work experience.
Skills
- General office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
- Basic English and arithmetic (spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
- Customer service and handling inquiries tactfully and patiently.
- Typing on a personal computer with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Use of standard office equipment (computers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, cash registers, credit card machines).
- Numerical filing systems for locating files until cases are fully scanned.
- Clear, tactful, and effective communication with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and court personnel, both verbally and in writing.
- Understanding and adherence to departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement, and attorneys.
- Following verbal and written instructions and protocols.
- Proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Independent judgment in interpreting and applying policies, procedures, rules, laws, and regulations.

Physical Requirements
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion greater than sedentary work but the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
