About the Role
The Judiciary Clerk is an entry-level clerical position performing case processing duties and responsibilities to include processing all pleadings, forms, and orders pertaining to civil/family cases in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court.
Responsibilities
- Assist the public and attorneys at the counter and via telephone by providing information regarding court policies and procedures and assisting with proper completion of various court-related forms.
- Prepare new civil/family case files by reading pleadings, typing initial docket entry, and establishing case file folders for the documents.
- Maintain case docket by entering records of documents/pleadings as they are received using a computer keyboard.
- Provide information about the status of cases or about Clerk's office procedures both at the counter and by telephone.
- Prepare summonses, writs, bills of costs, etc. via computer system.
- Index new cases and judgments using a computer keyboard.
- Use and maintain numerical filing system to locate files until all cases are completely scanned.
- Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
- Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
- Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
- Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.
Requirements
- High school diploma (or GED equivalent).
- One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.
- A Bachelor’s Degree, Paralegal/Associate’s Degree, 60 college credits, or a Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.
Skills
- Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.
- Typing on a personal computer (35 WPM).
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Use of standard office and business equipment including personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, cash register, scanner, fax machine, etc.
- Proficiency in Odyssey, MDEC-File and Serve, MS Word & Excel, Outlook.
- General knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Familiarity with standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
- Basic English and arithmetic skills (spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
Physical Requirements
- Sedentary work: exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Sitting most of the time; walking and standing required only occasionally.
