About the role

Responsibilities
- Enters data into the court’s case management system and answers inquiries relating to case matters from the general public for Charles County District Court.
- Serves as a backup to other assigned clerk functions, such as cashier, when needed.
- Processes criminal/traffic, civil, and domestic violence case filings, to include setting trial/hearing dates.
- Enters officer dates into the officer’s portal.
- Greets and assists customers at the counter and over the phone with general questions concerning court information.
- Answers inquiries relating to civil, domestic violence, criminal, and traffic matters.
- Provides information and resources to customers.
- Serves as a backup Cashier, when deemed necessary by Supervisor and/or County Clerk.
- Performs other miscellaneous duties to include filing, boxing old files, stripping files, and assisting clerks in other sections as requested by Supervisor.
- Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma (or GED equivalent).
- Experience: One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.
- Note: A Bachelor’s Degree may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.
- Knowledge: General office practices, procedures, and equipment; standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary; basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Skill: In customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently; active listening, empathy, problem solving, and communication; typing on a personal computer; accuracy and attention to detail; ability to use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, cash register, scanner, fax machine, etc.; use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems; communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing; understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures; provide assistance, guidance, and direction to others in a polite and efficient manner; exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys; follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment; exercise independent judgement in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation; apply job-related terminology, policies, procedures, regulations, and laws to define problems, collect data, establish facts, record data, appropriately complete forms, and provide information to customers; pay attention to detail; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, subordinates, superiors, and/or the general public; work within time constraints, meet fixed deadlines, and demonstrate good organizational skills.
Qualifications
- Physical Requirements: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
- Equipment, Machinery And Tools: Personal computer, cash register, calculator, copier, fax machine, and scanner.
- Knowledge of general office equipment is required to perform daily work.
- Software And Computer Skills: Microsoft Office, MDEC, Outlook, File & Serve, Courtroom.
