Overview
Do not apply if you are not local to Bethesda, MD or if you cannot obtain a public trust clearance. BRMi is seeking a Junior Database Administrator to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Hosting and Storage Services On-Premise Cloud Support program.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the administration and maintenance of enterprise database environments.
- Maintain database availability, performance, and capacity to ensure reliable system operations.
- Support installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades of database software.
- Afford assistance with database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery activities.
- Perform routine database maintenance including user account management, database health checks, and storage management.
- Monitor database jobs, alerts, and scheduled maintenance activities.
- Afford assistance in troubleshooting database performance issues and resolving operational problems.
- Afford assistance in supporting database migrations, refreshes, and system upgrades.
- Create and maintain database documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and operational runbooks.
- Afford assistance in implementing database security controls, permissions, and access management.
- Afford assistance in coordinating with infrastructure, application, storage, and cybersecurity teams to support hosted applications.
- Afford assistance in monitoring database backups and validating successful recovery operations.
- Participate in scheduled maintenance windows and provide after-hours support as required.
- Perform other database administration duties supporting enterprise hosting services.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education, technical training, and experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience supporting enterprise database administration or database operations.
- Experience supporting Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar relational database platforms.
- Experience performing database monitoring, backup, recovery, and routine maintenance activities.
- Knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts.
- Experience supporting Windows and Linux server environments.
- Familiarity with database security, user administration, and access controls.
- Experience documenting technical procedures and operational activities.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative technical team.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a NIH Public Trust.
Desired Experience
- Supporting NIH, HHS, or other Federal Government IT environments.
- Experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), or comparable database management tools.
- Familiarity with database replication, high availability, and disaster recovery concepts.
- Experience supporting cloud-hosted database environments in AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Knowledge of ITIL service management processes.
- Experience with scripting languages such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
- Familiarity with enterprise monitoring and ticketing tools.
- Oracle Database Administration Certified Associate (OCA)
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
