Responsibilities
- Serve as Advisor to the student newspaper, The 1851 Chronicle
- Teach one undergraduate Journalism course per term ranging from foundational news writing and reporting, to feature, investigative and multimedia journalism
- Teach a 1-credit practicum for 1851 staff
- Oversight of students in the planning, creation and promotion of the 1851 Chronicle's monthly print publication and its digital channels
- Recruit and engage the campus community in the work of the paper
- Guide and train students in journalism practices including writing, research, AP-style, reporting and ethical standards
- Supervise the administration of the news organization
Qualifications
- At least five years of experience in professional journalism
- A Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication or related field
- Commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population
- Demonstrated success or potential to teach journalism courses at the undergraduate level
- Experience working with online platforms and multimedia reporting
- Experience as a college media advisor or the lead reporter or editor on one or more significant journalism projects
- Experience in sport journalism especially desirable
- Advanced degree in journalism or a related field, or comparable professional experience (10+ years)
- News management experience
- Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and digital journalism tools and storytelling strategies (video, audio and/or multimedia)
- Knowledge of operating, marketing plans and training programs for news staff
