Joist Designer - NMBS

Responsibilities

• Read and understand production bills of material, structural drawings, and steel erection drawings to produce accurate shop orders for production.
• Perform data entry and design of open‑web steel joists and steel decking using a proprietary design program.
• Prepare shop orders and detailed documentation for production.
• Review designs and shop orders created by other designers.
• Handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast‑paced, production‑driven environment.
• Meet schedules for assigned projects.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Prior experience in the steel joist industry is a plus.
• Design‑related degree with knowledge of statics and materials is a plus.
• Willing and able to work 50+ hours per week during busy seasons.

Skills

• Good verbal and written communication abilities.
• Proficient computer skills.
• Basic understanding of geometry and trigonometry.
• Ability to visualize how elements fit together in 3D when working from 2D drawings.
• Willingness to go beyond typical duties to assist co‑workers and customers.
