About St Augustine’s Centre

St Augustine’s is a highly respected specialist charity working with people seeking asylum, and new refugees, who are rebuilding their lives in Calderdale. We help with advice on immigration and asylum and offer one-on-one support with welfare, housing, health, and access to wider services. Renowned for our person-centered approach, we provide a welcoming, safe and inclusive space. We offer English language classes, training, creative, social, sports and wellbeing activities, trips and volunteering opportunities.

What do trustees do?

Trustees have overall responsibility for the charity, providing strategic leadership, oversight and accountability. Trustees do not manage the day-to-day running of the centre — this is carried out by staff and volunteers led by our Director.

  • Set the charity’s strategic direction
  • Act as guardian of our vision and values
  • Ensure we meet our legal and financial responsibilities
  • Support and constructively challenge the staff team

About The Trustee Treasurer Role

Our current Trustee Treasurer is stepping down after more than seven years in the role. We are seeking someone with the right skills and experience to take on this important position.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Company Secretary
  • File accounts and annual returns to Companies House and the Charity Commission
  • Maintain bank accounts and mandates
  • Authorise payments and oversee movement of funds
  • Ensure compliance with our governing documents (Memorandum and Articles of Association)
  • Support the preparation of annual accounts
  • Work with the Director on budgets and forecasts
  • Support financial systems (including QuickBooks)

Time commitment

  • Voluntary role (reasonable expenses are paid, including travel and childcare where needed)
  • 4 Board meetings per year, lasting around 2 hours each (usually held in person, with the option to join online)
  • Preparation time of around 1 hour per meeting
  • Trustees also join at least one Board sub-group, meeting 4 times a year

Overall, the commitment is approximately 8 hours per month, with flexibility depending on your availability. Support is available for trustees whose first language is not English.

Requirements

  • Experience in finance, accounting, or company secretarial work
  • All trustees will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check and provide satisfactory references

Safer recruitment and inclusion

We are committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.

We are part of the Experts by Experience Employment Initiative. The network supports inclusive recruitment of people with lived experience of the UK asylum or immigration system. If this is your experience, you can find useful resources and request free, private mentoring support with your application.
