JOB TITLE: Veterinary Technician II - NHP, FDA White Oak Animal Program

About the Role

The Veterinary Technician II provides veterinary care, animal protocol support, and treatments for non-human primates and other laboratory animals. This includes daily observations of animals with abnormal health conditions or study-related conditions, administering injections, intravenous blood collection, medical treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian, and surgery support.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with the Attending Veterinarian and Researchers to enhance animal care and provide customer services.
• Coordinate support schedules with Researchers and the Project Manager.
• Perform health observations and provide veterinary care as directed, reporting abnormalities to the Attending Veterinarian.
• Assist with surgery support, including pre- and post-surgery monitoring, anesthesia monitoring, and vitals documentation.
• Administer drugs or treatments to animals, calculate dosages, and record drug use in Controlled Drug logs or animal clinical records.
• Assist researchers by restraining/positioning animals for examination or treatment and providing animal handling training as requested.
• Ensure procedures and practices align with AAALACi accreditation and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs).
• Assist in experimental planning and logistics/scheduling requirements when requested.
• Ensure all safety requirements are met and report potential hazards related to animal care, facilities, or equipment.
• Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records, log books, and clinical/project documentation.
• Comply with the QA/QC program.
• Stay current with laws, regulations, and guidelines affecting animal care and use at the FDA.
• Maintain knowledge and competence in lab animal science, husbandry, technical procedures, and facility management.
• Perform blood collection or other technical/veterinary procedures.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• AALAS LAT certification required at the time of employment; must obtain LATG within the first year.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in an animal facility or veterinary clinic.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Knowledge of PC applications, including word documents and spreadsheets.
