POSITION TITLE: Animal Care Technician I&II - NHP

About the Role

Under the direction of the Task Manager and Floor Supervisor, the Animal Care Technician III provides care and husbandry for Non-human Primates (NHPs), assists investigators, maintains facility cleanliness, and ensures compliance with established procedures and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide animal care and husbandry services for nonhuman primates, including feeding, watering, handling, restraint, cage and bedding changeouts, and cleaning/sanitizing animal rooms and equipment.
• Monitor environmental parameters, assess vermin control, and perform animal health checks.
• Assist in the transport, inspection, and storage of animals, feed, and bedding materials.
• Perform minor equipment and facility maintenance.
• Observe and report abnormalities in animals, equipment, or facilities to supervisors.
• Coordinate and provide training and mentorship to ACT II and ACT I staff.
• Ensure procedures align with AAALACi accreditation standards for NIH facilities.
• Adhere to security, confidentiality, and safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Assist in experimental planning, logistics, and project scheduling as requested.
• Participate in ongoing employee training, with emphasis on safety and health practices.
• Maintain accurate records, logbooks, and project documentation in compliance with QA/QC programs.
• Recommend operational improvements to increase efficiency or effectiveness.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a laboratory animal facility working with NHPs.
• ALAT certification preferred; LAT certification required within 1 year of employment.
• Excellent command of written and verbal English for daily communication with investigators and staff.

Physical Requirements

• Climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, talking, and hearing.
• Lifting/moving up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Animal care duties are performed indoors in vivariums, barrier facilities, surgical/test procedure labs, or animal housing/bedding processing areas. Work may involve:

• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Exposure to hot/humid conditions, objectionable odors, aerosols, dust, animal dander, and noise.
