Responsibilities

• Plan and implement a variety of recreational activities, including leisure service activities, enrichment activities, intramurals, incentive programs, special events, holiday activities, and school vacation activities.
• Facilitate the use of incentive dorms/motivational areas.
• Maintain an inventory of equipment and recreational needs.
• Engage in healthy relationships and boundaries with both staff and youth.
• Work cooperatively with Juvenile Correctional Officers (JCOs) to provide adequate supervision, a safe environment, and engagement of youth during activities.
• Incorporate feedback from all campus staff into activities to ensure the needs of youth and the campus are met.
• Be aware and vigilant of all individualized plans for youth involved in activities.
• Collaborate with facility administrators, program management, and other recreation program staff to design and implement the facility’s recreation activities as part of the agency’s rehabilitation strategy.
• Support youth programming on the dorm by providing materials for leisure, coach-led activities, and meeting specialized needs for self-contained programs.
• Document recreation activities and maintain required records, files, and forms in a timely and accurate manner.
• In the event of absence, collaborate with direct care staff to provide necessary equipment for scheduled coach-led recreation, leisure recreation, and enrichment activities.
• Work cooperatively and collaboratively with co-workers, providing ongoing mentoring and coaching to JCOs when needed.
• Carry an equal workload and assist co-workers when able.
• Work evenings and weekends as scheduled to meet campus needs.
• Practice and model appropriate self-regulation skills, remaining calm during times of stress and crisis.
• Provide a predictable schedule for youth that is transparent, with warnings and prompts for all movements and transitions.
• Maintain an inventory of equipment, remove faulty or malfunctioning equipment immediately, and report to appropriate supervisors.
• Perform all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures, including reporting safety hazards and completing required documentation in the event of an accident or injury.
• Attend work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.
• Perform a variety of related duties as assigned.

Career Ladder and Training

This position is part of the approved TJJD career ladder for Juvenile Correctional Officers (JCO) Recreation. Personnel receive career ladder salary adjustments upon meeting established eligibility criteria per agency policy until reaching the top level of the ladder. Placement on the career ladder depends on experience and education, and progression to the highest pay level depends on experience and performance.

• Juvenile Correctional Officer II (Recreation): Performs moderately complex (journey-level) work under general supervision with limited latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
• Juvenile Correctional Officer III (Recreation): Performs complex (journey-level) work under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
• Juvenile Correctional Officer IV (Recreation): Performs highly complex (senior-level) work under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Newly hired JCOs or rehired JCOs who have been separated for more than 18 months are required to attend the pre-service training academy and complete on-the-job training on a full-time basis. JCOs returning within 18 months of separation are not required to attend the pre-service academy and will be placed in full-time status upon re-employment.
