JCES Specialist
Nature of Work
This is skilled work in the operation of a paratransit vehicle for the transportation of persons with disabilities and/or the elderly throughout the city limits as assigned. Work involves responsibility for driving a 15 passenger modified van, transporting passengers in a safe, courteous and professional manner and providing assistance to persons with mobility impairments to and from the vehicle. Work also involves responsibility for conducting daily vehicle inspections, performing basic record keeping duties, collecting fares from customers and providing information. Work is performed under general supervision once the daily routines and operating procedures are learned. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through conferences, reports and observation of work in progress.
Responsibilities
- Operates a 15 passenger modified van transporting passengers in a safe, courteous and professional manner; adheres closely to time schedules; collects fares from customers and maintains ridership and pertinent records.
- Provides assistance in accordance with training for disabled and/or elderly passengers to and/or from building or residence door to and/or from assigned vehicle; operates accessibility equipment (wheelchair lifts and securement devices) and secures mobility devices safely and appropriately and in accordance with departmental and regulatory procedures.
- Remains alert to traffic and driving conditions to ensure safety of the passengers and the vehicle; drives defensively and courteously.
- Cleans and maintains the interior of the bus; replaces burned out light bulbs; performs minor maintenance duties.
- Serves on committees to evaluate schedules, service and etc. Drives for special events and community activities.
Requirements
- High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency; and experience in driving large vehicles and transporting the public; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the following: knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of operating large passenger vehicles (raised roof, dual rear wheel, wide body) safely in heavy traffic and/or bad weather conditions; knowledge of safety principles and practices applicable to vehicle operations; knowledge of local and state traffic ordinances and laws and defensive driving techniques; some knowledge of basic maintenance and repair of large passenger vehicles; some knowledge of common troubleshooting techniques and proper care of assigned vehicle and on board equipment; ability to operate a large passenger vehicle in a safe and proper manner, to adhere closely to time and route schedules, to collect fares and maintain logs, and provide information to passengers; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to prepare reports and maintain records of operations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, fellow employees, passengers and the general public; and, skill in the operation of large vehicles in heavy traffic, bad weather, in accordance with schedules provided, while transporting passengers in a safe and secure manner.
- Valid Class D Driver’s License. This position requires maintaining an excellent Motor Vehicle Record as set annually by the Liability Insurance Company.
Qualifications
