We are seeking a motivated research assistant to support a project investigating whether a mindset intervention can buffer students from instructors’ implicit bias and its effects on math attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions.
About the Role
This research aims to conceptually replicate and extend prior work by exploring the following questions:
- Does math instructors’ implicit bias predict minority students’ math attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions of the math instructor?
- Does receiving a growth mindset intervention moderate the relationship between math instructors’ implicit bias and students’ math outcomes?
- Do school context factors (e.g., race/ethnic diversity, poverty, economic inequality) influence these relationships?
The study employs high-quality measures and a rigorous design, with potential for significant scientific and social impact in addressing the racial/ethnic achievement gap.
Responsibilities
- Assist with literature reviews and data collection related to implicit bias, mindset interventions, and student outcomes.
- Support data analysis and interpretation under the supervision of the principal investigator.
- Help prepare research materials, including surveys, intervention protocols, and study documentation.
- Collaborate with team members on manuscript preparation and conference presentations.
- Contribute to project coordination, including participant recruitment and communication with schools or institutions.
Requirements
- Current enrollment in or completion of a bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, sociology, or a related field.
- Strong interest in social psychology, implicit bias, educational equity, or mindset interventions.
- Familiarity with research methods, statistics, and data analysis (e.g., SPSS, R, or Python).
- Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Prior research experience (e.g., lab work, independent projects, or coursework) is preferred but not required.
