ITS Operations Tech I

About the role

The ITS Operations Technician I monitors traffic via computerized surveillance and control equipment located within an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) managed area. They disseminate information to the public through various forms of communication, contact with governmental and private entities, and the traveling public. They also dispatch maintenance employees and alert first responders via telephone, radio, or other electronic means.

Responsibilities

• Advises the general public of traffic conditions through the use of computerized variable message signs, highway advisory radio, and/or low frequency television broadcasts.
• Affords assistance in developing routine incident response scenarios.
• Affords assistance in performing real-time traffic studies to determine traffic routing.
• Disseminates traffic information through various communication devices to other governmental agencies located within the operations center and/or managed area.
• Maintains traffic flow and conditions through the use of loop detector systems, closed circuit television systems, and/or automated vehicle identification systems.
• Updates traffic management data base.
• Uses two-way radios to interact with other transportation and law enforcement agencies.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Experience: 2 years of experience in Traffic studies, analysis, computer ops, electronics, traffic management, telecommunication ops. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Qualifications

• Customer Service experience - preferably in telecommunications, basic computer skills required.
• Some knowledge of: Freeway managementsystem concepts and operations Trafficflowprinciplesand procedures ApplicableITSrelatedcomputerapplicationsand operations Emergency response procedures.
• Some skill in: Collecting, sorting and compiling data Analyzing and organizing business and technical data Administrative support practices and procedures to include writing, editing and report writing techniques, recording meeting notes, record keeping and records management Using computers, applicable programs, applications and systems Using applicable electronic test equipment Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
• Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
• Standing - prolonged periods of time
• Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
• Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures view a computer screen; extensive reading
