Specific Position Duties
- Daily animal care activities to include: feeding, animal observations/identification of clinical concerns, and nail trimming
- Husbandry activities to include cage change/cleaning, use of power wash and chemical dispensing equipment, and general facility sanitization and support
- Milking of rabbits and may provide advanced operational support to meet production goals and adhere to established schedules
- Proper restraint of rabbits to facilitate general animal care, transfers, sample collection, and advanced handling (AI restraint)
- Technical skills to include IP, IM, IV, SC, and IC injections, and IV blood collection procedures. Assess animals and initiate veterinary care and animal treatments.
- Animal identification applications to include ear tags, tattoos and RFID transponders. May generate and track colony identification information and program RFID transponders.
- Provide advanced support and perform training of new staff in all husbandry and/or milking procedures.
- Exhibit ability to evaluate processes and propose improvements to Management.
- Maintain oversight of complex processes (i.e. breeding strategies, PM of milk equipment) and provide instructions to peers to complete the individual associated tasks.
- Utilize computer and paper based systems to accurately document and/or record information to assure compliance with applicable regulations, and company policies.
- Have a firm understanding of applicable Quality Systems (e.g. change control, deviations).
- Write, modify, and provide training (as assigned) on SOPs/WI/TM.
- Serve as a designated trainer on assigned tasks.
- Demonstrate the ability to work on assigned projects independently with little or no supervision.
- Identify safety issues and initiate corrective actions to reach resolution.
- Identify and communicate animal welfare concerns.
- Exhibit a sound understanding of applicable animal care and use guidelines.
- Weekend and holiday coverage required on a rotating basis
Position Qualifications
- A High School Diploma or GED is required, 4-7 years of laboratory animal experience
- An AS or BS (in related discipline) with ≥3 years of laboratory animal experience is preferred
- AALAS certification at the LAT level is required
- Must be able to work in a team-oriented production environment with attentiveness to detail, accuracy and exhibit strong organizational skills
- Strong attention to detail and compliance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions
- Demonstrated commitment to teamwork and exhibit strong interpersonal and leadership skills with team members
- Exhibit strong working knowledge of computer applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and internet). Ability to record and evaluate data.
- Ability to push/pull wheeled carts weighing up to 500 pounds
- Ability to lift and manipulate up to 50 pounds
- Duties require long periods of standing and/or sitting for an average of six hours a day
- May be exposed to materials and chemicals that are potentially allergenic
- Duties require actions that involve repetitive motion, to include that of hands and wrists
