IT TECHNICAL SUPPORT SPECIALIST I

About the role

This intermediate position maintains and updates operating systems on multi-tasking computers, ensuring the agency’s computer systems run efficiently. The role involves standard maintenance tasks performed independently, collaboration with supervisors on complex system modifications, and occasional after-hours technical emergency responses. Technical support directly enables the agency to mobilize forces and coordinate disaster relief without critical delays.

Responsibilities

• Lead lower-level staff.
• Implement, administer, and enforce written IT policies, procedures, and standards to ensure compliance.
• Oversee the selection, development, implementation, and operation of IT services.
• Provide input, research, and recommendations for updates to IT policies and procedures; review drafts.
• Submit network service requests to the Department of Information Technology (DoIT) intake.

Requirements

• One year of experience maintaining and modifying operating systems for multipurpose, multi-tasking computers.
• Must be a current Maryland Military Department IT employee.
• Employees assigned duties requiring motor vehicle operation must possess a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license with fewer than 5 points.
• May be subject to 24-hour call-in and must provide a reachable telephone number.

Qualifications

Candidates may substitute the following for the required experience:

• Thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field, including coursework in machine or assembler computer languages, operating systems, and data communication technology.
• Experience operating multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems; scheduling, controlling input/output, or maintaining a tape library; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using third-generation programming languages (substitution on a year-for-year basis for high school education).
• A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field, including coursework in machine or assembler computer languages, operating systems, and data communication technology.
• U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Computer Systems Operations classifications or specialty codes in the Information Technology field (substitution on a year-for-year basis).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience leading lower-level staff.
• Experience implementing, administering, and enforcing IT policies, procedures, and standards.
• Experience providing IT services for a State or Federal agency.

Competitive salary (Grade 18).

• Compressed work schedule: 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Tuesday through Friday.
