IT Project Manager - Infrastructure and Security
About the role
We are seeking an experienced Senior IT Project Manager to lead technology initiatives within a healthcare research department. This role sits at the intersection of project management, IT infrastructure, and information security, driving the planning and execution of systems that support clinical trials, research data management, and scientific computing environments. The ideal candidate combines strong project leadership skills with a working knowledge of IT infrastructure and security practices relevant to regulated healthcare and research settings.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end planning, execution, and delivery of IT projects supporting research operations, including clinical data systems, research databases, laboratory information systems, and scientific computing platforms
- Develop and maintain project charters, scope documents, timelines, budgets, resource plans, and risk registers
- Project manage IT work across cross-functional teams of IT staff, researchers, biostatisticians, data scientists, vendors, and external partners
- Apply structured project management methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid) appropriate to project complexity and regulatory requirements
- Report project status, risks, and milestones to stakeholders and leadership
- IT Infrastructure and Security Oversight:
- Partner with infrastructure and security teams to ensure projects align with enterprise architecture standards, network design, cloud/on-prem hosting requirements, and data storage practices
- Evaluate infrastructure needs for new research systems, including servers, storage, networking, identity/access management, and high-performance/scientific computing
- Ensure projects comply with healthcare data security and privacy requirements (HIPAA, HITECH) and research-specific regulations (21 CFR Part 11, GxP, IRB requirements as applicable)
- Career and Business Continuity Planning:
- Coordinate disaster recovery, business continuity, and data integrity planning for research systems
- Stakeholder and Vendor Management:
- Serve as the primary IT point of contact for research investigators, department leadership, and external collaborators on technology initiatives
- Manage vendor relationships, contracts, SLAs, and procurement processes for research IT systems and services
- Translate scientific and clinical research requirements into actionable technical project plans
- Financial Responsibility:
- Track finances to project work
- Provide forecasting for equipment and labor
Requirements
- Proven experience leading complex IT projects in a regulated environment
- Strong understanding of IT infrastructure, security, and compliance standards relevant to healthcare and research
- Experience with Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid project management methodologies
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams
- Knowledge of HIPAA, HITECH, and research-specific regulations (21 CFR Part 11, GxP, IRB requirements as applicable)
- Basic understanding of cloud and on-premises hosting requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in IT project management
- Experience with project management tools and methodologies (e.g., Microsoft Project, JIRA, etc.)
- Experience with regulatory compliance in healthcare and research settings

$75/hour, W2 Contract
Schedule
Hybrid, must be based in Northern California (1-2 days per week in Pleasanton, CA)
