About the role

The Maintenance Irrigation Technician troubleshoots and repairs existing irrigation systems, assesses irrigation systems’ effectiveness and efficiency, makes recommendations to clients, completes reports, irrigation controller charts, as-builts, and other documents as part of daily duties. This role plays a critical part in establishing strong relationships with new clients and their properties and is key within the Landscape Maintenance Division. The Irrigation Technician reports findings from job site visits to the Account Manager and collaborates to propose upgrades, repairs, and enhancements to existing irrigation systems.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot irrigation systems to determine repair needs and ensure proper functioning.
  • Layout and install new or renovated irrigation systems.
  • Pull and fit piping for irrigation systems.
  • Set sprinkler heads and valve boxes.
  • Maintain upkeep of irrigation systems in designated areas.
  • Activate and deactivate irrigation systems according to seasonal priorities or pre-established schedules.
  • Work in public right-of-ways, commercial sites, apartment properties, resorts, retail centers, and similar locations.
  • Communicate with customers routinely to ensure satisfaction, solve problems, and discuss additional landscaping opportunities.
  • Execute timely and quality service at all customer locations where irrigation work is performed.
  • Visit properties to evaluate revenue-generating opportunities and assist with the design of irrigation proposals.
  • Alert the Account Manager of any potential problems and recommend improvements in methods, schedules, and procedures.
  • Ensure the security of all tools, equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Safely and properly utilize equipment and hand tools.
  • Participate in on-call services for evening, weekend, and holiday emergency support.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment and materials used to ensure sufficient inventory.
  • Maintain strict punctuality for starting and ending times, breaks, and lunch periods.
  • Observe all company policies and procedures, including dress standards, safety, and timekeeping.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of commercial irrigation systems, parts, controllers, valves, sprinkler heads, and associated components.
  • Basic understanding of a broad range of irrigation system controllers, including weather management controllers.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, professionalism, and business decorum while maintaining quality and technically proficient work.
  • Effective administrative, organizational, and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow directions and apply logical thinking to define problems and initiate appropriate action.
  • Must follow written or verbal orders.
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately use an electronic handheld device to record time worked.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with commercial irrigation systems.
  • Prior experience in the Landscape Maintenance Industry with emphasis on troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing commercial landscape irrigation systems.
  • Irrigation technician certification preferred but not required.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and auto insurance.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting, carrying, and manipulating objects up to 50 pounds for varying periods of time.
  • Constant standing, sitting, walking, stooping, squatting, bending, climbing, twisting, traversing uneven ground, reaching, pulling, stretching, grasping, and gripping (hand tools and equipment).
  • Getting in and out of vehicles (cab and bed) throughout the day.
  • Must be able to wear all personal protective equipment according to company Safety Health and Environmental Policies, Industry Related ANSI Safety Requirements, and OSHA Regulations.

Working Conditions

Work is performed outdoors with exposure to:

  • Hot and cold temperatures, sudden changes in temperatures.
  • Varying levels of noise, slippery surfaces, rain, dust/dirt, fumes, wind.
  • Uneven ground and landscaped slopes.

Equipment/Machinery

A wide range of hand tools including but not limited to:

  • Loppers, shears, pruners, hand saw, bow rake, leaf rake, pole pruner, pole saw, push broom, shovel.
  • Pipe wrench, pipe vise, channel lock pliers, wire cutters, universal remote controls, wire toner, pipe cutters.
