About the role

The Irrigation Mechanic performs testing, inspection, repair and maintenance on the irrigation systems and equipment. Programs the central irrigation control system and/or field controllers in order to maximize the efficient use of water, while minimizing the irrigation impact on University programs and activities. Maintains controllers and valves (manual and automatic), sprinkler pipes (main/lateral), and valve control wiring. Acts as liaison to campus grounds and helps coordinate construction and repair projects. Provides input on new construction and landscaping, which may include irrigation design, installations, and renovations. Maintains clear and accurate documentation (electronic and written) of all operating data, inspections, testing and maintenance (corrective and/or preventative) performed. Updates equipment documentation, specifications and drawings, as needed. Responsible for responding to jobs and service requests generated through work orders, scheduled maintenance programs or by emergency call-in. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purposes of resolving immediate property damages or safety concerns. Performs all job duties in adherence with University and departmental safety guidelines and policies. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

Responsibilities

  • Programs the central irrigation control system and/or field controllers in order to maximize the efficient use of water, while minimizing the irrigation impact on University programs and activities.
  • Maintains controllers and valves (manual and automatic), sprinkler pipes (main/lateral), and valve control wiring.
  • Acts as liaison to campus grounds and helps coordinate construction and repair projects.
  • Provides input on new construction and landscaping, which may include irrigation design, installations, and renovations.
  • Maintains clear and accurate documentation (electronic and written) of all operating data, inspections, testing and maintenance (corrective and/or preventative) performed.
  • Updates equipment documentation, specifications and drawings, as needed.

Requirements

  • Current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position.
  • Experience: 4 years of experience in the irrigation skilled trade; irrigation design and installation, including dynamic and static pressure theory, pressure loss, and head placement; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience repairing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic operated irrigation equipment.
  • Experience operating tractors, backhoes, trenchers, and utility trucks.
  • Experience using tools and equipment common to the irrigation skilled trade and landscaping field.
  • Knowledge: Knowledge in irrigation design and installation, including dynamic and static pressure theory, pressure loss, and head placement.
  • Ability to work effectively; following through on assignments with minimal direction and fluctuating workload.
  • Skills and abilities: Ability to safely and appropriately use hand and power tools, grinders, lathes, jacks, hydraulic presses, pneumatic hammers and wrenches, threaders, and gas and electric welders; Ability to operate tractors, backhoes, trenchers, and utility trucks; Ability to record information accurately as is necessary to perform the job responsibilities; Ability to estimate time, methods and materials needed from construction documents; Ability to read and understand documents such as complex technical procedures, work instructions, blueprints, plans, manuals, specifications, and diagrams; Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations; Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, staff, faculty and students; Ability to communicate and understand safety regulations and hazards; Knowledge in safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected; Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; Ability to repair mechanical, electrical and hydraulic operated irrigation equipment; Basic knowledge and technical skills with computer programs and applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, web-based Work Order System, etc.).

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma Requirement; Preferred Degree in landscape irrigation design and/or maintenance.

  • Ability to work effectively; following through on assignments with minimal direction and fluctuating workload.

Benefits

However, the expected pay scale for this position is up to $43.90 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Pay

The full salary range for the Irrigation Mechanic is $40.57 - $45.68 per hour.

As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.
