About the Role

The International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) is seeking a Professor for the Disaster Resilient Society Promotion Lab within the Practical Research and Collaboration Division. We are looking for a researcher or practitioner who aims to develop a practical approach to disaster risk reduction studies by conducting multi-layered analyses of the responses of individuals and organizations in light of lessons learned from domestic and international disasters, and by bridging academic insights with local communities, municipalities, and other organizations.

Qualifications

Holders of a doctoral degree.

We particularly value candidates with the following track records:

  • Incorporating the results of research and practical experience into national and municipal recovery and disaster risk reduction plans
  • Working on-site in disaster-affected areas as a researcher or practitioner, collaborating with stakeholders—including residents, government agencies, and businesses—to formulate disaster risk reduction and recovery plans and address their challenges
  • Research and practice aimed at building a resilient society, particularly regarding preparedness for disasters during peacetime and collaboration with stakeholders such as local residents, government agencies, businesses, and the media
  • Initiatives to enhance community resilience through the participation of voluntary disaster risk reduction organizations and similar groups
  • Research and practical experience in passing on lessons learned from disasters to the next generation and other regions, and in embedding these lessons as part of the collective social memory
  • Engaging in disaster risk reduction education and awareness-raising activities in schools and communities
  • Providing lectures and research guidance in the field of disaster science to undergraduate and graduate students

  • Reprints of academic papers and/or books: selected 5 copies (maximum) consistent with the publication list (Form2). If the applicant has book chapter(s), add a copy of the publication information pages and table of contents indicating the applicant’s contribution.

  • Application forms (designated in items 1 to 4 above) must be written in English or Japanese.
  • Publication list (Form 2) must be categorized as “Peer-reviewed papers in academic journals”, “Reviewed conference papers and proceedings”, “Reviewed abstracts”, “Other papers”, “Books”, “Industry property rights”, “Invited presentations,” and so on.
  • Application forms (designated in Items 1 to 3 above), and one set of five selected papers or books (Item 4 above) should be submitted by uploading in the designated form.
  • The submitted documents will not be returned to the applicant.

Term of Employment

Starting: April 1, 2027. Tenured position.
