Intimate Partner Violence Intervention Specialist VPP

About the Role

Under general supervision of the Violence Prevention Program (VPP) Supervisor, the Intimate Partner Violence Intervention Specialist provides direct support, crisis intervention, case management, and advocacy for victims of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking identified within the medical center. This role involves intervening with patients, assisting in safety planning, lethality assessment, advocacy, resource linkage, and emotional support for survivors treated at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Responsibilities

• Works with survivors to formulate and maintain relevant and meaningful case plans.
• Develops and maintains case records documenting services provided to survivors.
• Provides concrete case management and current, effective in-house and external resources to survivors.
• Interfaces with clients in the office and community to help them negotiate resources and achieve personal goals.
• Develops individual action plans; serves as a role model, advocate, and accompanies clients in court settings.
• Provides crisis intervention and/or conflict mediation as needed.
• Works cooperatively and professionally with hospital staff in accordance with the Hospital’s Mission and Policies.
• Communicates verbally and through documentation with staff regarding interventions, outcomes, and resources provided.
• Advocates on behalf of survivors with community service providers.
• Meets regularly with survivors to support empowerment.
• Conducts intakes and assessments with potential clients.
• Facilitates and/or co-facilitates support groups, as assigned.
• Provides face-to-face assessment to survivors to determine intervention, safety plans, housing goals, and objectives.
• Interacts with survivors and team members daily.
• Assists in the daily operations of the program, as needed.
• Participates in staff meetings, case conferences, and other meetings as required.
• Builds service partnerships with community-based organizations, including participating on community task forces, as assigned.
• Projects a positive role model while maintaining confidentiality with clients and staff.
• Follows all VOCA grant goals, objectives, and outcomes.
• Attends trainings and continuing education activities as assigned.
• Completes VOCA timesheets weekly.
• Participates in 24-hour on-call backup rotation.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in social work, social science, health, human services, or related field is required. Two (2) years of work experience with victims of domestic violence may be accepted in lieu of degree.
• Must possess a valid Maryland Non-Commercial Class Driver's License and proof of current vehicle insurance.

Qualifications (Preferred)

• Two (2) years of work experience with victims of intimate partner violence.
• Master’s degree in social work or health-related field.
• Experience working in an acute hospital setting.

Skills

• Ability to demonstrate empathy and passion for working with victims of intimate partner violence.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to work collaboratively with all levels of personnel, including healthcare providers, community providers, and law enforcement.
• Knowledge of services available within the community.
• Ability to respond supportively to individuals in crisis and assemble relevant facts.
• Knowledge of and interest in related issues, particularly the dynamics of intimate partner violence, stalking, strangulation, human trafficking, and sexual assault.
• Ability to complete multiple duties and tasks correctly and on time without being prompted.
• Proficiency in Information Technology, including the Internet, social media, and Microsoft Office Suite products.
• Ability to learn and use program-specific computer applications.
• Ability to work cooperatively as a team to provide optimal services to survivors and their families.
• Strong attention-to-detail and organizational skills.

Schedule

PRN - Evenings, weekends, and on-call rotation required. Weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call, and overtime may be required. May require the use of a personal automobile while conducting official business.
