Position Purpose

Under the direction of the radiologist, performs appropriate diagnostic exams and studies to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervision of IR staff
    • Captures and assigns daily schedule of assigned personnel and ensures accurate record keeping.
    • Observes and assists technical and ancillary staff in the performance of job duties, including providing suggestions for improved work efficiency and quality.
    • Performs preparation of control and quality control and assessment tasks (QA/QC).
    • Serves as the Clinical Coordinator for IR students.
  • Evaluation and Implementation of Appropriate Care
    • Under the direction of the Radiologist and the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS), administers ionizing radiation for the purpose of diagnosis which includes positioning the x-ray beam with respect to the patient, anatomically positioning the patient, selecting exposure factors, and initiating exposure.
    • Uses professional judgment to adapt imaging procedures to ensure quality diagnostic outcomes.
    • After reviewing all pertinent data and assessing the patient’s abilities and condition, selects the most appropriate patient care plan.
    • Selects appropriate shielding devices and appropriate immobilization devices.
    • Adheres to ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) safety principle.
    • Evaluates lab values prior to administering contrast media.
    • Absesses factors that may contraindicate the procedure, such as medications or insufficient patient preparation.
    • Reconfirms patient identification using two unique identifiers (Name and DOB) and verifies procedure requested.
    • Verifies female patient pregnancy status when appropriate.
  • Quality of Care
    • The technologist provides evidence-based care so as to prevent the development of a Healthcare Acquired Condition and hospital readmissions.
    • The technologist practices standard precautions during patient contact and while handling contaminated materials.
    • The technologist complies with CDC hand hygiene guidelines and works to reduce hospital acquired infections and other conditions.
  • Patient Satisfaction
    • Regularly applies AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) as well as other evidence-based behaviors when taking care of patients.
    • Shows empathy care to patients and family members present.
    • Actively helps the department meet the identified Patient Satisfaction goal.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of Radiologic Technologist program
  • Current registration and licensure by the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS)
  • Current registration and licensure by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT)
  • American Heart Association BLS
  • Demonstrated knowledge and abilities with the following:
    • diagnostic catheterization procedures on patients with known/suspected peripheral vascular disease
    • procedures which may include pulmonary involvement, including radial, brachial, and neck approaches
    • stents, thrombolysis procedures, and peripheral interventions
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an IR technologist
  • Education preferred from an educational institution approved by ARRT, Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JCERT), or the American College of Radiology (ACR)
  • 2+ years of experience as an Imaging Technologist
  • Previous experience as supervisor or lead

Special Position Requirements

  • Exposure Category I: Expected duties have routine potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues. Other potential hazards: exposure to chemical, biological, and radioactive substances; possible exposure to hostile individuals.

Work Requirements

  • Able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, compliant with KHI vision, mission, and values.
  • Able to manage technical business equipment i.e. phone, fax, computer etc.
  • Able to assist with the movement/manipulation of a patient and equipment weighing up to and over 300 lbs.
  • Able to care for patients with infectious diseases.
  • Able to sit, stand, walk, and bend for the duration of the scheduled shift.
  • Able to demonstrate concentration and visual and auditory acuity to watch monitors and follow instructions during exams.
