Interpreter for the Deaf - SUBSTITUTE (8/2026)
This posting is to establish a substitute pool for the 2025-2026 school year.
Requirements
Possession of a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent and one of the following:
- Completion of at least two years of study (minimum 48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education; or
- Possession of an associate degree or higher; or
- Passing a rigorous assessment that demonstrates the knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics at a level meeting State and Federal requirements.
Applicants may be exempt from taking the NCLB examination if they provide college transcripts verifying 48 units or more in core subject area courses with a grade of "C" or better. Transcripts must be submitted with the application. If an applicant does not possess enough units to be exempt, they must attach a letter requesting an examination date to their application. Applicants will not be able to submit their application without attaching either transcripts or a letter requesting an examination date.
Certificate Copy (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or have passed one of the following assessments: Educational Sign Skills Evaluation (ESSE-1/R), Educational Interpreter Performance Evaluation (EIPA), or NAD/ACCI. Effective 7/1/09 - Minimum score of 4.0 for assessments.)
Required documents:
- Copy of college transcripts verifying 48 units or more in core subject area courses with a grade of "C" or better; or
- Letter requesting to take the NCLB examination if no transcripts (choose "other" as the document type for the letter).
General Requirements
- Subscribe to an Oath of Allegiance;
- Submit to a general tuberculosis examination;
- Be fingerprinted;
- Complete a pre-placement physical examination;
- Show proof of identity and right to work in the United States;
- Comply with the District's drug-free workplace policy, including satisfactory results from drug testing.
Benefits
Permanent Positions Only:
- Health Insurance Plan: Employees working 5 hours or more receive family medical coverage, employee life and vision insurance, and employee or family dental coverage.
- Holidays: Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for 16 authorized holidays for twelve-month employees, provided they were in a paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.
- Longevity Pay: 3.5% increase added to base salary after 10 years, plus 3.5% after 15 years, plus 4.7% after 20 years, plus 4% every five years thereafter.
- Retirement: All new employees working four hours or more must become members of the California Public Employees Retirement System and the Federal Social Security program. Contributions are made by both the District and employees. Employees working less than half time have full retirement coverage under Social Security.
- Sick Leave: Regular full-time twelve-month employees earn 12 days of paid sick leave per year, with no limit on accumulation. Sick leave is prorated for employees working less than twelve months.
- Vacation: Regular full-time twelve-month employees earn 12 days of paid vacation leave per year. After 5 years of service, the number of days earned increases. Vacation is prorated for employees working less than twelve months.
Additional Benefits:
- Shift Differential: Employees required to work more than four hours of their regular shift (non-overtime) between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. receive a 3.75% pay increase for the entirety of each applicable day.
- Professional Growth: After one year of service, regular classified employees may earn additional salary increments for improving skills through continuing education.
- Veterans Preference: Veterans and disabled veterans receive preference points added to passing scores in open examinations for entry-level classifications.
- Employee Service Credit: Regular employees receive a credit of 0.5 points for each complete year of service, up to a maximum of 5 points, added to final composite scores in open examinations.
Employment Process
- Merit System: Appointment and continuing employment are based on the merit principle.
- Eligibility List: Candidates successfully completing all phases of the application and examination process are ranked on the appropriate eligibility list for one year.
- Certification: For permanent positions, the top three ranked candidates are submitted to the appointing power for selection.
- Probationary Period: Regular non-management classified employees must serve a six-month probationary period in a permanent position.
