About the Role

GPSSample is an Android application used by public health professionals to conduct gold-standard sampling of households in the field. This role is critical for the GPSSample Team, working with the CDC GPSSample Team (4 people), 1 Task Force for Global Health GPSSample Developer, and 1 Task Force for Global Health GPSSample Community of Practice Lead.

70% of the student’s time will be spent on field testing the GPSSample application, requiring walking around outside. The CDC Team has a detailed Testing SOP outlining studies for the student to conduct tests and send zipped exported files after each study. 30% of the time will be spent learning the GPSSample code (developed in Kotlin) and writing code to fix bugs or make enhancements, potentially starting with expanding documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field testing of the GPSSample application (70% of time), including:
    • Working outdoors and traversing neighborhoods
    • Following application test procedures and identifying issues
    • Creating and tracking Jira tickets across the lifecycle
    • Committing to ~7 hours of field testing per week
    • Noting areas to strengthen the application and increase user acceptance
  • Develop and enhance GPSSample code (30% of time), including:
    • Learning the existing Kotlin codebase
    • Fixing bugs or implementing enhancements
    • Expanding documentation of existing code

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate in a college or university offering a four-year degree
  • Completion of freshman year or higher and in good academic standing
  • College transcripts required as part of the interview process
  • Ability to work in-person at an Emory University location (remote work options may be granted at department discretion)

Qualifications

For GPSSample Application Testing (70%):

  • Detail-oriented, motivated, and good at following instructions
  • Ability to work outdoors and traverse neighborhoods
  • Preferred: Prior participation in a field survey

For GPSSample Development (30%), preferred:

  • Experience with Kotlin programming language
  • Experience using Android Studio IDE
  • Experience with Git version control
  • Own computer (Mac preferred or PC)
  • Experience in application development or minimum exposure to Kotlin
