The Metropolitan Public Defender’s Office seeks qualified students to support our work through an unpaid internship. Ideal candidates will be familiar with client-centered representation and committed to serving marginalized individuals.
About the role
This internship offers hands-on experience observing court proceedings, conducting interviews, visiting clients, and developing release plans. Interns will participate in supervision meetings and attend Office-wide events.
Responsibilities
- Observing criminal court proceedings
- Conducting client and family interviews
- Visiting clients in various locations
- Compiling and managing client records
- Attending and advocating in court
- Participating in supervision meetings
- Attending Office-wide meetings and events
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an accredited BSW/MSW program
- Completed coursework in human behavior and/or social policy
- Pass a background check as required by host agencies or field placement agreements
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to social justice, advocacy, and working with people involved in the criminal legal system
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor or Master of Social Work (BSW/MSW) program
