Intern - Unit Management (Fall/Spring)

About the role

This internship is for the Fall (September–December) or Spring (January–May) session. The position is located at the SDSP/Jameson Prison Annex in Sioux Falls, SD, and reports to Travis Uecker. The hourly rate is $18.83.

Responsibilities

• Maintain daily contact with convicted felons to assist with day-to-day living in a prison or trusty unit, organize their activities, provide motivation and guidance, and facilitate work and program options so they can learn to change criminal behavior.
• Organize schedules, coordinate activities, and manage events for a caseload of offenders to ensure smooth operation of a housing unit.
• Assist offenders with individual and family problems, Individual Program Directives, scheduling, transition plans, parole plans, and institutional adjustment to help them understand and change behavior.
• Coordinate and manage unit offender programs to ensure compliance with department policies and institutional operations memoranda.
• Assign offenders to work assignments and conduct monthly payroll.
• Investigate and process offender grievances.
• Conduct unit orientation and inmate interviews, and complete documentation used to determine cell/room assignment, classification, program eligibility, and scheduling follow-on meetings.
• Serve as the staff representative for restrictive housing hearings and for inmates charged with major rule infractions at disciplinary hearings to provide for unit security, staff and inmate safety, and offender rehabilitation.
• Perform general security functions as needed by the facility, including cell/area searches, emergency response, and rounds.
• Perform the delegated Unit Case Manager and Housing Captain duties in their absence.
• Perform other work as assigned.

Requirements

• Must be a current part-time or full-time student (minimum of 6 credit hours) in the upcoming semester or in the immediately preceding semester.
• By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
• Preference may be given to applicants with junior/senior standing, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
• Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation; an arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment.
• Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening.
