About the Role
NBC DFW Internships provide students with real-world experience and exposure to the television news industry. Internships are paid and do not require course credit. This opportunity offers hands-on experience in all facets of the newsroom, including assigning, gathering, telling, and producing news stories. During the academic year, you will work in areas such as reporting, producing, the assignment desk, and social video production. Your assignment will be based on business needs, your experience, and your interests.
Responsibilities
- Participate in daily planning meetings and contribute ideas for news programming based on the NBC DFW News Strategy.
- Observe communication in the control room during news programs among producers, directors, and production personnel.
- Use websites and social media tools to monitor and report news, find sources, and generate story leads.
- Monitor mainstream and social media for story ideas and competitive intelligence.
- Write assigned segments, including digital newscasts, using AP Style.
- Make beat checks and enter current and future news assignments into the system.
- Handle phone calls and coordinate guests for newscasts.
- Write and format articles for our website using AP Style.
- Collaborate with reporters, meteorologists, and other news team members to prepare web articles.
- Edit video from newscasts, add metadata, and post them on social media and our website/app.
- Generate story ideas focusing on Google Trends, SEO strategy, and current events.
- Participate in brainstorming sessions for new content and platform ideas.
- Stay updated on social media trends and pitch ideas for incorporating them into our newsroom strategy.
Requirements
- Must be actively enrolled in a degree-granting program at an accredited institution during the internship and provide documentation confirming degree progress.
- Current class standing of sophomore or above (30 credits).
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship by NBCUniversal.
- Must be willing to work at the station in Fort Worth, Texas.
Qualifications
- Pursuing a major in Journalism, Communications, or a similar field.
- Familiarity with Premiere and Photoshop.
- Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and creative skills.
- Strong project management, organizational, and presentation skills.
- Experience using TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.
- Prior use of WordPress preferred but not required.
- Interest in television, streaming, or digital industries.
- Knowledge of AP Style and newswriting.
- Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) a plus.
