About the role

Our Internship and New College Graduate program is designed for students seeking a truly immersive and hands-on experience. At Southland, we view every student as a potential hire and ensure each intern, co-op student, and new college graduate is set up for success to accomplish short and long-term career goals. This program exposes you to exciting projects and potential career paths with one of the country’s largest MEP building systems firms, operating in Phoenix, AZ; Las Vegas, NV; Los Lunas, NM; Cheyenne, WY; Salt Lake City, UT; and El Paso, TX.

The internship introduces candidates to a career in Occupational Health & Safety within the Design/Build HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection industry. The primary responsibility is assisting the Safety Manager in enforcing and regulating safety procedures to ensure compliance with company policies and OSHA standards.

Responsibilities

• Ensure all tasks and functions on project sites are performed safely in accordance with company safety policies and OSHA standards.
• Help implement the Corporate Safety Award Program.
• Provide distribution of certification cards for various industrial equipment training and maintain records of training.
• Report and manage all company vehicle claims.
• Assist in reporting workers compensation claims.
• Update Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) manual.
• Assemble various safety manuals for distribution.
• Assist in implementing and distributing safety tailgate meetings.
• Maintain records of signed safety tailgate meeting forms.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
• Working knowledge of construction safety practices and a desire to learn more about safety and loss management.
• Ability to work directly with Southland’s field employees and customers in a professional manner.
• Understanding of, and ability to comply with, state, federal, and local OSHA safety and health regulations.
• Strong work ethic and initiative to complete tasks with limited support.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, and active listening skills.
• Resourcefulness, resilience, and a positive attitude in adverse situations.
• Accountability in stressful situations (avoids placing blame).
• Goal-oriented with a collaborative “We vs. Me” attitude.
• Competent in general business writing and public speaking.
