About the role

Our Internship and New College Graduate program is designed for students seeking a truly immersive and hands-on experience. At Southland, we view every student as a potential hire and ensure each intern, co-op student, and new college graduate is set up for success to accomplish short and long-term career goals. This program exposes you to exciting projects and potential career paths within one of the country’s largest MEP building systems firms.

The internship introduces candidates to a career in Occupational Health & Safety for the Design/Build HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection industry. The primary responsibility is to assist the Safety Manager in enforcing and regulating all safety procedures to ensure Southland Industries meets safety requirements in the field and facilities, while gaining an understanding of the management and coordination of division safety activities and the construction process.

Responsibilities

• Ensure all tasks and functions on project sites are performed safely in accordance with company safety policies and OSHA standards.
• Help implement the Corporate Safety Award Program.
• Provide distribution of certification cards for various industrial equipment training and maintain records of industrial equipment training.
• Report and manage all company vehicle claims.
• Assist in reporting workers compensation claims.
• Update Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) manual.
• Assemble various safety manuals for distribution.
• Assist in implementing and distributing safety tailgate meetings.
• Maintain records of signed safety tailgate meeting forms.

Requirements

• Pursuing a degree that aligns with Southland’s needs, such as Occupational Health and Safety.
• A working knowledge of construction safety practices and a desire to learn more about safety and loss management.
• Ability to work directly with Southland’s field employees and customers in a professional manner.
• Understanding of, compliance with, and ability to communicate state, federal, and local safety and health OSHA regulations.
• Strong work ethic and initiative to complete tasks with limited support.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Resourcefulness, resilience, and problem-solving skills.
• Positive attitude and accountability in stressful or non-ideal situations.
• Goal-oriented, collaborative, and team-focused with a “We vs. Me” mindset.
